The Island of California is an independent state in the Pacific Region of the Americas. With 80.5 million residents and a total area of approx. 160,993 miles (of which 6,000 submerged), it is the biggest independent republic in the Americas. It was established by Dylan Huan in 2045 following the New York compromise. It is the only state in the world to have Island in its name despite being a peninsula.
Ethymology
The name Island of California was defined by public voting on the DOGENET during the transition period that followed the New York Compromise. It refers to the mythical island of California in the fictional story of Queen Calafia, as recorded in a 1510 work The Adventures of Esplandián by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo. It is reported that the name started circulating in February 2045 on the DOGENET as a meme. From the words of Michael Hasik:
It was a joke at first, a meme. But as time passed, it clearly became the most popular option on the Doge. It evokes the idea of an independent, proud, separate state with a strong identity. We ended up loving it
